Middle School Music
All Incoming Middle School Students Have an Opportunity to Join Middle School Band/Strings/Chorus
Dear parents of incoming 6th, 7th and 8th graders,
Your child has the opportunity to register for the outstanding band, strings, or chorus program at Sycamore Canyon Middle School. Band, Strings, and Chorus are elective courses that are part of the Middle School curriculum and are not an extracurricular activity. The band, strings, and chorus programs are year long classes that students attend during one of their elective class periods.
The Sycamore Canyon Band, Strings, and Chorus programs, through their pursuit of Excellence and Superior ratings, has proved consistently that they develop students that are highly productive, have an exemplary work ethic, and are well prepared for their future academic and aesthetic successes.
Why should a student join band, strings or chorus?
Many studies have shown that music education increases early brain development and improves students’ overall academic performance.
Current research shows that music:
Enhances higher brain function
Teaches the habit of excellence
Improves reading and math performance
Builds teamwork skills and enhances cooperation
Provides self-paced learning and mental concentration
Develops higher critical thinking skills
Students that participate in formal music training generally have higher test scores due to the nature of their musical studies. Students in band, strings, and chorus must strive for success by achieving their personal best on a daily basis. As a result, students are learning the value of hard work and the pursuit of excellence in all of their endeavors.
Aside from all the studies about how music is great for you student, the students in the music department are a family! They have a lot of fun together and support each other wholeheartedly.
If you already know your child wants to give the music department a try or if he or she is a returning music student, make sure to bring the form on the reverse side of this sheet filled out to Orientation Day.

If you are interested in joining one of our programs make sure to visit Mr. and Mrs. Palomino in the GYM at orientation and make sure to fill out the middle school music form that is located in the orientation packet.
